Is it ok to paint terracotta pots?

Yes definitely you can paint Terracotta pots. First soak the terracotta pots in water for an hour, let them dry. Once dry, apply paint over the pots. You can apply acrylic paint or chalk paint as well. It won’t hurt your plants if you are planning to use it as planters.

Which paint should I use on pots?

If your terra cotta will be used outdoors, I recommend oil paints. You can use acrylic colors as well, the color needs to be sealed with varnish. Or you can apply a mixture of glue and water in equal quantities to seal the color.

Where can I buy clay pots?

They are available at craft stores, home décor stores.

How do you prepare terra cotta pots for painting?

The first step in a preparing new terracotta pot is to wipe away dust or dirt. The second step is to soak them in water. Let them dry and they are ready for painting.

Step 1: Soak the pots in a tub of water for an hour and scup it with stiff brush. Pots need to be soaked in water at least for 4 to 5 hours because terracotta pots absorb water.  Ensure your pots are completely dry before starting to paint them.

Step 2:

Use acrylic colors to paint the pots. Once you finish coloring the pots, let them dry. Decorate the pots as per your choice. I chose blue to paint the pot and drew beautiful designs with white color using a brush. Use thin brush for painting. There are many ways you can decorate terracotta pots. Such as you can draw mandala art on it, dot painting art or any other Indian folk art like Warli art, Madhubai art etc.

Step 3:

I love coloring and decorating terracotta pots. I have painted all the pots with different color started from blue color. Choose any color you want and just flow your brush on pots. Always use flat brush to paint the pots. After coloring the pots let them dry completely. Once dry properly start painting and decorating them. So here I have used thin brush to draw designs. White color is the best option to highlight design. To draw a design I have used white color for all pots. You can use additional decorative material to make them more attractive.

Choose vibrant colors to paint the pots. I chose magenta, blue , yellow , orange  and green. U can use these pots as planters. Place it as a home décor to beautify your space.
