Hello friends! Welcome back to Smruti’s Art corner. I am back again with very beautiful home décor idea which is the part of tradition Hindu culture. Yes, I made bandarwal/Toran for my homes main door.  Torans/ bandarwal are used to decorate the main entrance of the home. The main idea behind decorating the homes is to please and attract the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. These Torans/bandarwal are the first thing that welcomes guests. This can be hanged on doors as well as walls and can be used on many occasions like puja, festivals, house warming, marriages and inauguration.

This is traditional decorative hangings also known as bandarwal, refer to a decorative door hanging in Hinduism, usually decorated with marigolds and mango leaves, or a string that is tied on the door with the flower on it as a part of traditional Hindu culture in the occasion of festivals and weddings. A Toran/ bandarwal may feature colors such as green, yellow and red. They can be made of fabrics, metals or any decorative material.

Importance of hanging Toran/bandarwal –

Torans/bandarwal are used to decorate the main entrance of the home. The main idea behind decorating the homes is to please and attract the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The ethnic embellishments are meant to bring the good spirits to your home and wind off the evil ones.

Although you can buy beautiful Torans/bandarwal from market but when you put your creativity you can make unique designs as per your choice. Handmade is not a catchphrase, it is the actual and authentic representation of the good you are investing in – made by hand. Buying readymade products can feel cool but the prettiness of handmade things personalizes your quality and uniqueness is something to take pride in.

I made this Toran/bandarwal from the material which I had at my home. Let’s take a look what material I have used and how I made it.

Material used for Toran/ bandarwal:

  • Red and blue wool
  • Pompoms
  • Mirrors
  • Cardboard cutouts
  • Decorative material (pearls, Golden frill)

Toran/ bandarwal can be made of fabrics, metals, cardboard, flowers or any decorative material. Think beautiful designs and get your material ready. I had few colors wools, I chose red and blue color wool for Toran/ bandarwal. Choosing pompoms for Toran/ bandarwal was the best choice. The beauty of Torans was flashing its uniqueness after sticking mirrors on it. You can use any color wool and arrange them as per your choice.

Grab all the supplies before you start making this Toran. First and very important material is cardboard. To wrap the woolen thread I have used cardboard cutouts. I had red and blue wool at my home, so I used them in making this Toran. Many colors are available in wools, it’s completely your choice which color you want to use. You can make combination of red and yellow or orange and green also. Grab colorful wools and make the Toran/ bandarwal attractive as you want.

Make 10 square shape cutouts of cardboard. Wrap woolen thread on cardboard. Make five red and five blue cutouts.
